Death on the Nile
Death on the Nile (Hercule Poirot, #17) - Agatha Christie

10/03/15

I don't know how I've gotten to this point in my reading and have never read AC (considering I went through a few year years of reading almost exclusively mysteries) But this will be my first because it is the one of the few my library had and the dust jacket claims Dame Agatha considered it to be one of her very best mysteries.

So.....I wanted to love it and I only liked it. I figured I'd read this and want to immediately immerse myself in all things Agatha. Maybe it's just me or maybe it's just this volume. Maybe I should have started with a volume of short stories. I want to love Agatha so if any of my friends out there have a favorite they would like to recommend I really want to give her another go round!

One Word from Sophia
One Word from Sophia - Jim Averbeck, Yasmeen Ismail
  I loved this book!

Sophia was great--she had such wonderful movement and expressions.

All she wants is a giraffe for her birthday and she uses all her best arguments and tailors each argument to each individual person in her family.

I also loved that there were some nice long words in the story (with helpful definitions in the back of the book!)

Does she ever get her giraffe? You have to read and find out!!

Midnight Angel
Midnight Angel - Lisa Kleypas
  2.5

I love Lisa Kleypas but this one was a total miss for me.

I returned book 2 Prince of Dreams (Stokehurst, #2) by Lisa Kleypas of the series even though I'm usually OCD about finishing a whole series. I just couldn't do it!

Earthling
Earthling - Helge Dascher, Aisha Franz

They have this listed as Alien (this title has been translated from German into English) but the English title is Earthling.

This is a very bittersweet look at the lives of three women, a mother and her two daughters, who are all sad and hide that sadness from each other. The story takes place over a few days as the two daughters wait for their father to return home to begin a vacation without the mother.

The art is done in a smudgy pencil sort of style which works well because you can feel the disconnect the characters feel towards each other and the world in general.

Space Dumplins
Space Dumplins - Craig Thompson
The art was great!

I loved the family dynamic between Violet & her parents. Violet kicked some serious butt--she was smart, resourceful & stood by her friends (I have a special fondness for Elliot the Chicken) But the whole whale poop thing just seemed silly.

I guess I'd have to say overall it seems half baked. He has some great characters and doesn't quite know what to do with them. Bummer because it really is charming.
Typing Challenged

I've made exactly two posts in the last bit of forever and they both had major errors in the title lines.  You'd thing I could actually type out the titles of the books I've just finished but apparently not.  I guess I should be thankful for spellcheck. ;)

Shadow of the Moon
Shadow of the Moon - M.M. Kaye
A sweeping epic story using the backdrop of the rebellion of the Sepoys (or Indian soldiers) in India against the rule of the East India Company.

I spent more time with this book than any other so far this year. It was a big ol' thing that required it's own bag to transport it to and fro from work so I could read it on the bus and at lunch. Good thing it was so engrossing or it would have been easy to hate this book. I really can't improve on what people have already said so if you enjoy historical fiction and don't mind spending a few (more or less, your results may vary) days longer than usual on a book I can guarantee a rip snorting time.

I spent many a day at my bus stop fuming aloud about some injustice (and there was always some injustice) happening to my favorite character of the moment, forgetting that the whole world could hear me.

Do Alex and Winter get their happy ever after?? Read and find out.

Walk on Earth a Stranger
Walk on Earth a Stranger - Rae Carson

4.5

Loved it-though the degree of heartbreak was fairly high

with the main characters parents being murdered at the start of the story

(show spoiler)

which I guess is to be expected from "Covered Wagon Fiction" God--that makes it sound so typical which it most definitely was not.

In Lee Westfall, Rae Carson has written a strong female who has more than one secret to keep as she heads to the California goldfields. I don't want to say more because I don't want to give anything away. All I can say is if you loved her debut series I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Don't know how I'm going to wait until the next volume!!
