An Extraordinary Union
An Extraordinary Union - Alyssa Cole

I liked this but didn't love it (though it might be me--I have never had a harder year with books than this year. Politics are sucking the life out of everything)

I will say I loved the conflict in the feelings between the two main characters & the discussion of how an interracial relationship during civil war times was handled. It felt honest because things are never cut & dried. Life is filled with all sorts of grey areas.

Ghosts
Ghosts - Raina Telgemeier
I really enjoyed this even after spending time last night checking out the various controversies surrounding this book. I read 4 different blogs (which are listed in other's reviews & who all seem to not recommend this) & the accompanying comments & I don't get what the big deal was. But that's just me.
I thought the exploration of an afterlife for a child who knows their illness will probably not take them to adulthood by using the Dia de la Muerte celebration was genius.

Demon, Volume 1
Demon, Volume 1 - Jason Shiga
This was nicely diverting & very different from the two other works I have read by Jason Shiga.

Mr Shiga: who broke your heart or what job or project or thing was sucking the life blood out of you that prompted this exercise in the first place?

Remarks on location:
I am moving this as a replacement to My Sister Rosa which my roommates keep snagging & then returning. Next time it comes back I'm putting a Post-it on it saying "See me for recommendations". I'm hoping this is too nihilistic for them.

Update: My roommate's oldest kid loved this!

El Deafo
El Deafo - Cece Bell
I'm a late-comer to this one which considering what a graphic novel nut I am is somewhat surprising. The artwork is great & the story unique & extremely accessible for the audience it's aimed at but something is missing to make this a 5 star read for me. Maybe it was the change of humans into animals--IDK. I would definitely recommend this but I just didn't love love love it.

The very last Terry Pratchett (which is why it received an extra star!) in which some very surprising things happen, like Granny Weatherwax dying and Tiffany taking her place

The book itself was a wee bit rough but the overall idea was wonderful and I think it was a very fitting ending to a wonderful career.

One of my favorite authors ever!

Taken By the Duke
Taken By the Duke - Jess Michaels
I was looking for a certain type of romance and this fit the bill but sadly the story suffered for that very reason. If you're looking for a historical romance with a high steam factor this should do it. Lots of people seem to like this author and I would definitely read her again but hopefully the next book I read has as much care go into the story-line as it does the steam factor.
Because then Hot Damn Baby!

Tell the Wind and Fire - Sarah Rees Brennan
Meh--I guess that's why it took so long. I was just never in any hurry to get back to it.

Though it did make me want to read [bc:A Tale of Two Cities / Great Expectations|9748274|A Tale of Two Cities / Great Expectations|Charles Dickens|https://d2arxad8u2l0g7.cloudfront.net/books/1436724821s/9748274.jpg|14637456]!

Halloween Bingo: The Reveal

It's time to reveal our new bingo card!

Over the next 13 days, Obsidian and I will be posting some of our favorite books to fit under some of the categories.

Rules of the Game

  1. Have fun!
  2. The categories that are marked with an image are intended to be a bit of a free-for-all, so use your imagination in filling them! A cover image, the word within the title or text, or some sort of an allusion that only makes sense to you is fine - let us know how the book fits!
  3. There is a buddy read/read-along category. In a follow-up post, I'll be announcing a read-along that OB & I have planned for the month of October and participating in that will fill this category. In the alternative, Murder By Death has already announced an Ammie Come Home buddy read, which will start on September 1. And if you have a different idea, feel free to throw it out there!
  4. The center square is free, as always!

If you have questions or comments, post them below!
